Practices
We practice on the scenic Farmington River, not far from Hartford, on Sunday mornings from 8:30 to about noon. The kids practice about 5 miles.
What do I need to bring?
We supply the canoes, paddles, and life jackets. You just need to bring yourself!
Everyone has different preferences, but it is usually a good idea to dress in layers. Since we practice in the morning in the spring, the day might start out cool, but it usually warms up. A t-shirt and shorts is perfect under sweatpants and a sweatshirt. Old sneakers are great, as they will get muddy when you get in and out of the boat. Please, do not wear "Crocks," or other shoes of that type, as they tend to be slippery and get stuck in the mud. It is also helpful to bring a change of clothes and shoes. We practice "switches" at the last couple practices of the season, but it is a good idea to always be prepared!
For many girls, it is easier to canoe by kneeling in the boat, rather than sitting on the seat. Volleyball knee pads work well, with a circle cut out of the back of the knee to maintain circulation. Other girls bring foam bleacher seat pads to put in the bottom of the boat.
Most importantly, be sure to bring plenty of water! Water bottles and water back packs are both great options.
